STOP THE GEORGIA VOTER CANCELLATION PORTAL: The NAACP is raising alarms against the launch of an on-line system in Georgia that allows anyone to cancel someone else’s voter registration as long as they have that person’s date of birth, drivers’ license number, or social security number. While this is supposed to be used for people who are deceased or who have moved out of state, the lack of accountability in the system can easily lead to the disenfranchisement of voters, and while misuse of the system is a felony, there’s a strong likelihood that disenfranchisement cases will not get resolved until after the election. Let’s join the NAACP’s call and ask the DOJ via this simple on-line messaging form to investigate and shut down this portal ASAP, and to reverse any cancellations that were done through the portal site. If you are close to anyone in Georgia, ask them to also contact Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger and their local election officials to demand that they use their influence to shut it down.

Almost 40,000 people registered to vote in the 48 hours after Biden announced he was suspending his reelection campaign and endorsings Harris. Vote.org said 38,500 new voters registered – the largest number of registrations in a 48-hour period this election cycle and an almost 700% daily increase in new registrations. Of the new voter registrations, 83% were from people aged 18-34. (The Hill / Politico)

I’m a constituent and I’m outraged by the corruption on the Supreme Court. Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas have shown time and time again that their loyalty is to Donald Trump and the MAGA movement. The court can be fixed, and it must. It will require time, effort, imagination, bravado, and a huge electoral reckoning, but it can be done. And everything—our climate, our democracy, our safety, and our futures, depends upon doing it.

CONTACT OUR SENATORS: I’m appalled to learn that Samuel Alito had a Stop the Steal flag hanging at his house in the wake of the January 6 attacks. His excuse that the flag was his wife’s is pathetic—all other arguments aside, this is a man who believes women are subservient to their husbands and must only do their bidding. The simple truth is we were attacked; his household expressed support for that attack, and now he’s about to rule on a case about that attack. It’s deeply improper and wouldn’t be accepted in any other court in the country. He needs to recuse himself from this case immediately, as does Clarence Thomas. Will the Senator call for that? Also, I understand that several House members, including have announced the creation of a “Court Reform Now” Task Force. Good. I want the Senator to start a Senate version. The Judiciary Committee isn’t doing enough. We need term limits, court expansion, and a binding code of ethics for the Supreme Court. They’ve lost all credibility. Thanks.

Citizens who live in Washington, D.C. still don’t enjoy the same rights as other American citizens. D.C. residents do elect their own local officials, but laws those officials pass can be overturned by Congress; D.C. residents elect a delegate to Congress, but that delegate has no vote. The Washington D.C. Admission Act (HR 51) has passed the House twice and currently has 206 co-sponsors at this time. The Senate version (S. 51) has 46 co-sponsors currently. This effort has been pursued for decades. Let’s tell our MoCs that we want them to sponsor and promote this legislation to provide parity to DC citizens. Let’s also check out the DC League of Women Voters website which has many resources available, including a petition we can sign.

REFORM THE SUPREME COURT

Court watchers think that the Supreme Court is unlikely to rule that Trump has absolute immunity from prosecution in the election interference case, but they’re also reporting that the justices appear to be in no hurry to rule on the matter, potentially delaying the trial until after the November election. Meanwhile, the conservative super-majority Court has: overturned the federal right to an abortion; struck down affirmative action in college admissions; ruled in favor of LGBTQ+ discrimination in a fake case it never should have considered; issued non-binding, unenforceable ethics rules despite the revelation of ethics violations by some of its members; and more. Here are some ways we can help:

PREGNANT WOMEN TURNED AWAY FROM EMERGENCY ROOMS
Once again, the warnings of reproductive rights advocates have been tragically prescient. As they long predicted, an Associated Press report revealed that complaints that pregnant women were turned away from emergency rooms spiked in the months after the Dobbs decision, contributing to miscarriages and the death of newborns. This comes despite the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) requiring emergency rooms to treat, stabilize or provide a medical transfer to patients in active labor as long as they accept Medicare funding – a law dozens of hospitals are accused of breaking. While the threat of hefty fines and losing Medicare funding could sharply discourage hospitals from engaging in this sort of cruelty, it is unclear what if any penalties the Department of Health and Human Services has sought, weakening the deterrent, and many of these cases go under the radar entirely. This has to change. Let’s contact the White House and the Department of Health and Human Services at their comment line at 202-456-1111 and encourage them to put more resources and energy into aggressively and publicly cracking down on ERs that are illegally turning away pregnant women.

CLIMATE RISK DISCLOSURE FOR FEDERAL CONTRACTORS
The Biden Administration is starting to run out of time to impose crucial rule changes before they could be potentially reversed by a Republican trifecta via the Congressional Review Act. Among those promises that still need to be kept: the President’s pledge to require the federal government’s contractors and suppliers to disclose their climate emissions and risks. This would set obligations for thousands of businesses, particularly in defense and aerospace. The Federal Acquisition Regulatory Council was originally expected to have a draft rule set a year ago. A group of congressional Democrats led by Senator Elizabeth Warren sent a letter to the White House last week urging them to finalize this regulation as soon as possible. Let’s add our voices to theirs and contact the White House, along with council members Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, and head of the General Services Administration Robin Carnahan, to push them to get this long overdue rule issued.

RUSSIAN DISINFORMATION CONTINUES

Now that the GOP House Intelligence Committee chair has admitted that Russian propaganda is being spoken by other GOP members on the House floor and the GOP House Foreign Affairs Committee chair said “Russian propaganda has made its way into the United States, unfortunately, and it's infected a good chunk of my party's base”, we can only hope that other legislators will start to pay attention to what we’ve known for several years. Lately, the Russians have mimicked US news sources and websites with the intent of confusing consumers. They have also targeted US Ukraine funding by providing disinformation about our southern border. There are also social media accounts being created by foreign entities that are spreading disinformation and causing confusion and havoc. There’s ample evidence that the Russians will once again interfere with our November elections. Let’s implore our legislators to take this disinformation and interference seriously this time around not to be misled. Let’s also be on guard ourselves to disinformation.

“Public libraries saw 92 percent increase in number of titles targeted for censorship over the previous year,” reads the headline of the American Library Association’s new press release on books targeted for censorship in 2023, with 47% of books targeted in public libraries and schools involving LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC themes. While nearly every state saw book challenges in 2023, the most impacted states were CO, CT, FL, ID, IL, IA, KY, MD, MO, NC, OH, PA, TN, TX, UT, VA, and WI. Let’s tell our Members of Congress to co-sponsor H.R.6592—Fight Book Bans Act, which would authorize the Secretary of Education to provide grants to schools to cover the costs of book challenges, and to co-sponsor H.R.6830—Books Save Lives Act, which would, among other things, “classify discriminatory book bans as violations of civil rights laws” and “require the Government Accountability Office to report on the effect of book bans on underrepresented communities.”

TRUMP SAYS SOME UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS AREN’T PEOPLE, PROMISES BLOODBATH

Donald Trump followed his clinching the Republican nomination with multiple statements this weekend that were, even by his standards, extreme and deeply frightening. He promised a “bloodbath” if he is not elected in November and doubled down on his claims that undocumented immigrants are “poisoning the bloodstream of our country,” describing some as “not people.” (Trump also said those in prison for their part in January 6th are “hostages” and indicated he’d free them, and insisted Liz Cheney and other members of the January 6th Committee should be jailed.) Such dehumanizing rhetoric has already led to violence and cannot be treated as anything less than a promise of more by state agents if Trump wins. We need to take this as a call to put in the work to prevent him from ever taking power again. Let’s each commit ourselves to more shifts (texting, postcarding, phone banking) helping Field Team Six and Black Voters Matter register and turn out the voters we will need to stop Trump in November.

However, its latest policy statement reneged on that pledge, thanks in part to Republican lawmakers who are passing laws that punish corporations and ESGs for veering away from the fossil fuel industry toward greener alternatives. In nearly nine years, the DOJ has made twenty-two attempts to kill Juliana and silence the 21 Juliana youth plaintiffs. No other case in history has faced this kind of government persecution.

If the DOJ succeeds, the Juliana youth won’t be heard in open court. If we succeed, the youth will go to trial and they will win—and force the United States, the BIGGEST contributor to climate change in the world, to make systemic change and phase out fossil fuels.

WE NEED TO SLAM ISSA - Pass the bipartisan aid bill!!

In the early hours Tuesday morning, the Senate passed a bipartisan aid bill for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. The bill also includes humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza. The vote was 70-29 with 22 Republicans signing on. The bill now goes to the House where Speaker Johnson has already said it has no future as it does not include border security. Keep in mind that the House voted down a border-security bill last week at the behest of the former president to keep it an election issue and not work on the problem. We may have issues with parts of this legislation, but we are also committed to democracy around the world. Let’s slam Darrell Issa with our message that we want this bill passed, but that conditions need to be set for how Netanyahu uses the money. And you can add something like this (thank you Chris!): Rep Issa, this do-nothing Congress should embarrass you deeply--please show your political bravery and stop supporting the personalist self - serving ex president.

The U.S. launched strikes over last weekend at both the Houthis in response to attacks on international shipping lanes and US warships and at Iran-backed militants and military targets in Iraq and Syria in response to a drone attack that killed US troops, and national security adviser Jake Sullivan has indicated there is more to come. This is already a step beyond previous U.S. military action post-October 7th, but is unlikely to satisfy those on the right who are urging President Biden to attack Iran directly. Let’s make our voices heard right alongside those who want more violence. Let’s reach out to the White House and tell them to ignore the chickenhawks and do everything possible to avoid escalating towards war.

Today marks the 51st anniversary of the Supreme Court confirming the constitutional right to choose in Roe v. Wade, and the second since that right was stripped away by extremist right-wing justices. Let’s mark this day by recommitting ourselves to fighting to restore guarantees for reproductive freedom. Here are some ways we can take action:

SUPPORT EPA RULE TO REPLACE LEAD PIPES THAT CARRY DRINKING WATER
The EPA has issued a proposed rule requiring the removal and replacement of all lead water pipes in the next decade. However, many environmental organizations, such as the Alliance of the Great Lakes, are concerned about loopholes in this proposal that would allow some municipalities, like Chicago, that have a lot of lead pipes in their drinking water system up to 40 years to get the job done. This is far too long a time to risk our health. Let’s submit a public comment on the regulation, expressing this concern.

As Simon Rosenberg writes: The party of Lincoln and Reagan has become the party of Trump; Hard to see how they could have become so unhinged, barbaric, reckless, cowardly, and dangerous; how they could so brazenly act like a Russian fifth column and serially betray their country. ASK THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE TO INVESTIGATE VOTER PURGES
Just before the deadline to register to vote on the abortion referendum in Ohio last September, the Ohio Secretary of State quietly purged 26,000 people from the voter rolls, giving them no time to re-register. In Georgia, six conservative activists challenged nearly 100,000 people’s voter registrations. And the attack on voting rights continues as the 2024 election nears, with conservatives scrutinizing state voting rosters to challenge minority and younger voters who are more likely to vote Democrat, many of whom are unaware of the challenge until they show up to vote. While technically not illegal, “these purges disenfranchise eligible voters and undermine public confidence in our electoral system.” Let’s ask the Department of Justice to intervene to make sure that voting rights are protected and investigate these questionable tactics that reek of similar tricks played during the Jim Crow era.

FORCED BIRTHERS BRUTALIZING TEXAS WOMAN
For the first time since before Roe, an actively pregnant adult woman has gone to court to get an abortion – and right now, she may not be able to exercise her rights with horrible personal costs. A Dallas woman named Kate Cox has sought permission to terminate her pregnancy as the fetus, which she and her husband very much wanted, has a lethal abnormality and continuing the pregnancy poses a risk to her health and future fertility. It is unclear whether her circumstances qualify under the narrow medical exception in Texas’ abortion ban. She was granted a temporary restraining order by a district judge, but Texas’ indicted attorney general Ken Paxton convinced the state supreme court to halt the order and has threatened several hospitals with legal action if they perform the abortion. This is a tragedy, and one conservative lawmakers are deliberately causing. Let’s reach out to the White House and our lawmakers and ask them what action they are planning on taking to help Kate and all those who will come after her. And we can all take this moment to connect and sign up to volunteer with those campaigning to secure reproductive rights in key states, including Arizona, Florida, Missouri, Montana and South Dakota. Further, if we can, we can donate to support those working to help Texans in this frightening time – like the Center for Reproductive Rights, who are representing Kate in court; Frontera Fund and Lilith Fund, who fund abortions and the necessary travel to obtain one; and Avow, which is advocating for long-term change in the state.

REJECT NEW LIQUID METHANE GAS EXPORT FACILITY ON THE GULF COAST
Even as nations meet in Dubai amid the realization that the only way to prevent climate catastrophe is to phase out fossil fuels, the United States continues to greenlight several new controversial projects, like the Willow Project in Alaska. The latest item on the table is a new liquid methane gas export facility called CP2 on the Gulf coast of Louisiana, proposed by Venture Global. Earthjustice.org is organizing a letter-writing campaign to President Biden and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission asking that the proposal be rejected. We can get information and personalize our comments on their template or reach out directly to the White House, U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm, and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. LEXPAND BERRYESSA SNOW MOUNTAIN NATIONAL MONUMENT
A coalition of Native Americans and environmental activists in Northern California is calling on President Biden to use the Antiquities Act to expand the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument. The area is sacred to the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation and also serves as a critical corridor between other protected areas for tule elk, mountain lions, and black bears. Senator Alex Padilla and Representatives Garimondi and Thompson are echoing the call, and Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland has recently visited the area to consider the request. EXTRA, EXTRA - Feast on this from Simon Rosenberg, Hopium Chronicles: Biden - This week’s Economist/YouGov poll (question 36) finds Biden once again getting high marks from young people and Democrats on his handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict. 18-29 year olds approve of his handling of the conflict 37%-31% (higher than any other age bracket), Democrats 63%-18%. I know there are a lot of polls flying around now but be mindful of the question asked. It is possible to support a ceasefire, disapprove of Israel’s conduct and still be supportive of the constructive role Biden has played to get us to this point of pause, hostage release and restoration of humanitarian aid. It’s why to me the most important of these questions for domestic US politics is the approval of Biden’s handling of the conflict, which remains in deeply positive territory among Democrats, despite the media narrative; and remember we are in the very early days of the conflict, and much will change. Trump - I want to echo a point Joe Trippi has been making - Trump is weaker than is understood right now. In the Republican primary he is hovering around 60%, meaning 40% of Republicans still don’t support him (Biden is in the upper 70s and has no real primary challenger). He is now under 50% in the three early states of IA, NH, SC, meaning that a majority of the Republicans in the states seeing the most political activity are not currently backing him. This level of ongoing opposition to Trump is a significant matter, and something not happening on the Democratic side. As I’ve been saying for some time, the splintering of the GOP over the past few years due to opposition to Trump/MAGA, and now abortion extremism, is a very big story in our politics, and a central reason I remain so optimistic about 2024.

THE DANGER IS REAL
In a speech on Veterans Day, Donald Trump pledged to root out the “communists, Marxists, fascists and radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country” – dehumanizing language that scholars immediately pointed out echoed Hitler and Mussolini and can presage violence. This comes amidst a series of terrifying reports about his plans for his second term – mass deportation and detainment camps for immigrants, a new Muslim ban, investigating critics and using the military to quell protests and crime in cities, targeting the trans community, criminalizing homelessness, invading Mexico, purging the civil service, and more horrors outlined by Heritage Foundation schemers in the Project 2025 blueprint. The stakes we face in this election are unimaginable. It’s easy to vote in a dictator and near impossible to vote one out. As Joyce Vance writes, “if Trump wins in 2024, we lose the Republic.” We’ll be talking more over the next year about what’s to be done, but for now: let’s take this moment to renew our commitment to protecting democracy and our friends and neighbors against the threat posed by Trump by signing up to regularly help register and contact voters with our own Julian Indivisible, CBFD Indivisible, Field Team Six , Black Voters Matter and Activate America. TELL THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION TO BLOCK CP2
In the wake of the hottest September on record, the Biden Administration has a huge decision to make. The Calcasieu Pass 2 (CP2) liquefied methane gas export terminal planned for Louisiana’s Gulf Coast would enable 20 times the climate pollution expected from the Willow Project – emissions that would not technically count against America’s numbers because they will take place overseas but that will drag us into a hotter, more dangerous world nonetheless. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has already given its environmental approval and will consider its final approval this month. If FERC gives the okay, the Department of Energy will need to decide whether to grant CP2 a license to export, if it’s in “the public interest.” Let’s reach out to FERC, the Energy Department and the White House and urge them to recognize the climate emergency we face and say no to CP2. We can also urge our members of Congress to follow the lead of Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and put out public statements opposing this project, and donate to and get updates from the Louisiana Bucket Brigade, which is leading opposition to this project on the ground.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day is slowly replacing Columbus Day on the second Monday in October. It’s been recognized for decades in different forms and under a variety of names to celebrate Native Americans’ history and culture and to recognize the challenges they continue to face.
This week's action is to contact our Senators & ask them to KEEP WASHINGTON’S PROMISE ON CHILD PROTECTION FOR NATIVE AND INDIGENOUS KIDS It’s been decades since Congress passed the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, part of a promise from the federal government to answer for the tragedy and abuse that occurred in federally-run Native boarding schools. All too typically, this promise to indigenous Americans was broken and the programs created were never funded. Leaders like Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) and Senator Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM) are trying to change that with the Native American Child Protection Act (H.R.663/S.2273). This legislation will finally fully fund grant programs for child protection for Native and Indigenous kids, giving tribes and Native communities the tools they need to prevent, treat and prosecute family violence, child abuse and child neglect. The bill passed the House with 378 votes in September, and now awaits action in the Senate. RESTORE A FAIR AND EQUITABLE IMMIGRATION COURT SYSTEM
A rule by the Trump administration took away immigration judges’ ability to manage their own docket and gave the Courts authority to “administratively close” cases, eliminating procedural due process for immigrants and speeding up deportations. Now the Biden Administration is attempting to reverse this rule and make the hearing process more fair. Let’s review the proposal in the Federal Register and submit a public comment. CLIMATE WINS IN THE COURTROOM
Last week saw a landmark victory in the courtroom for the environment. A state court in Montana ruled in favor of young people who claimed their right to a “clean and healthful environment” was violated by a provision in state law that prevented Montana from considering the climate impact of energy projects. While the decision in Held v. Montana is subject to appeal and based on a specifically enumerated right in the state constitution, it is a clear sign that a judicial approach to forcing climate action could bear fruit. Our Children’s Trust, the nonprofit law firm in the Montana case, has cases pending in four other states, including one set for trial in Hawaii next year, and is pursuing a federal suit in Juliana v. U.S. which is on a path to finally be heard in court after years of setbacks and despite Justice Department resistance. Let’s urge the DoJ to stop obstructing Juliana v. U.S. from proceeding to trial. We can also donate to Our Children’s Trust to support their continued efforts.

FIGHT BACK AGAINST A HYPER-CONSERVATIVE SUPREME COURT

The Supreme Court closed its term with a series of devastating decisions gutting affirmative action, making it easier for business owners to discriminate against the LGBTQIA+ community and blocking President Biden’s student debt relief plan, building on their record of overturning years of precedent in favor of Republican positions. The verdict is clear: this is a hijacked Supreme Court, and we cannot let its outrages go unanswered. Let’s contact our members of Congress and let them know we want to see a significant and public effort for change, through a) a thorough investigation of the corruption allegations against Justices Thomas and Alito, including subpoenaing them, Leonard Leo and their benefactors to testify publicly; b) another push to pass Rep. Hank Johnson and Senator Chris Murphy’s proposed binding code of ethics and recusal for the justices, and most importantly c) their support for expanding the Court to rebalance it after the theft of multiple seats by the right. Let’s also encourage them to use all available tools, including the Supreme Court’s budget in the upcoming appropriations process, to make progress here.

A new report from the Center for Agriculture and Food Systems at Vermont Law and Graduate School has found that “current pesticide regulations aren’t consistently enforced, and vulnerable workers aren’t always able to seek help when there are violations.” The report studied Washington, California, Illinois, and Florida, but this problem likely exists in every state, given that the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) “receives little data from states, whose enforcement is spotty at best.” Let’s send this link to the report “Exposed and at Risk: Opportunities to Strengthen Enforcement of Pesticide Regulations for Farmworker Safety”, to the White House, to EPA Administrator Michael S. The EPA is proposing new rules to raise pollution standards from coal and natural gas fired power plants. These standards, if enacted, are projected to save $85 billion in climate and health care benefits. Since the fossil fuel industry is likely to fight this rule as much as possible, we can counteract the pressure by submitting a public comment and urging that the rule take effect as quickly as possible. IT’S TIME TO HONOR OUR BILLS

The US will default on its financial obligations as early as June 1, as MAGA Republicans continue to hold the world economy hostage to demands that will harm the American people, our service members and veterans, vulnerable immigrants, and the environment. We all need to pay our bills when they come due. It is the responsible thing to do, and our country has never failed to pay for the costs we agreed upon. The GOP is now saying that they don’t want to pay the bills we incurred, and seems to forget that a good portion of the debt we now have was caused by the outrageous tax cuts they gave to the wealthy during the previous administration. As Rep. Ocasio-Cortez said, “why should single moms and veterans have to pay for the GOP’s giveaways to the rich?” The country needs all House Democrats plus five House Republicans to stop this madness. There are two groups of Republican House members that may be willing to stop a default: those representing swing districts that voted for Biden in 2020, and those with a history of bipartisanship. Let’s all of us contact our MoCs and demand a clean, no-strings raising of the debt ceiling, just as we’ve always done, and tell them we want to see the wealthy and corporations taxed to the extent they were in the past. Let’s also reach out to the White House to encourage them to consider outside-the-box solutions like invoking the Fourteenth Amendment or minting The Coin to keep paying the bills.

More than 70 judicial vacancies are sitting empty right now because the committee can't move forward on nominees while Senator Feinstein is out. We can’t subpoena Justice Thomas. We can’t confirm a Labor Secretary. If Senator Feinstein resigns, Governor Newsom can replace her with a Democrat and the business of the Senate, including judicial confirmations, can resume immediately.

In another ominous development for democracy, Tennessee Republicans expelled two state representatives from their legislature for participating in a protest for action on gun violence – both black men, while a white woman state rep was spared. This abuse of power isn’t going unanswered, with both Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson vowing to run in upcoming special elections and local governments rallying to return them to their posts on an interim basis even in the face of Republican threats of further retribution. Let’s join the fight! We can contact members of the Shelby County Commission to call on them to reappoint Rep. Pearson here – a majority of Metro Nashville Council members are already committed to re-appointing Rep. Jones. If we’re able, we can also donate to each of their reelection campaigns or to the Tennessee Democratic Party. We can write a message to thank Rep. Jones (PO Box 2261, Antioch, TN, 37011) and Rep. Pearson (PO Box 9172, Memphis, TN, 38190) for standing up for school children and democracy. PUSH THE WHITE HOUSE FOR A PLAN ON MEDICATION ABORTION

Last Wednesday, a Trump-appointed federal judge notorious for accepting legally dubious conservative arguments heard a case that could overturn the FDA’s approval of mifepristone – one of the pills in the standard and very safe two-drug regimen for medication abortion. Reporters in the courtroom have indicated he seemed sympathetic to the anti-abortion argument. This decision would raise barriers to abortion nationwide, no matter what our state laws, at a time when medication abortions now make up a majority of terminations obtained in the United States. A ruling could come any time. And last Friday Wyoming became the first state to explicitly ban the use of pills for abortion. Let’s contact the White House and push them to publicly announce how they will respond to protect abortion access if Judge Kacsmaryk orders the FDA to withdraw its approval.

"Tyre Nichols should still be alive. A simple statement that has needed to be uttered far too often following the murder of Black people in this country.

His life was taken from him by five Memphis police officers (and potentially two fire department members) who chose to brutalize a man so horrifically that he immediately needed a feeding tube -- dying of his injuries 3 days later. Saturday, camera footage was released which will most-likely lead to pain, protests, and upheaval.

Backing up: Tyre Nichols was stopped by police officers for “reckless driving” approximately 100 yards from his home. The stop escalated, reports indicate there was a chase, and it ended in 3 minutes of police officers beating, pepper spraying, shocking, and restraining Tyre in what even the city’s police chief described as a “failing of basic humanity.” Here’s the CNN story for more context.

What is important for all of us to remember is:

This was a traffic stop
Every officer on that scene had an opportunity to de-escalate
This was entirely preventable

In the coming days, we’re going to hear a lot about how the officers were all Black and the ways in which that “complicates the narrative.” What we know as progressive organizers is that white supremacist structures harm Black people in a multitude of ways. One of those ways is through the extrajudicial murder of Black bodies. Another is through the assimilation of Black people into the system to shield it against charges of racism while continuing to carry out oppression on those same individuals.

Racism is a structure, not simply an act. Regardless of the fact that his murder took place at the hands of Black men, the fault lies at the hands of white supremacy.

In a clear example of that duality, these Black officers have been fired and charged with second-degree murder less than three weeks following Tyre’s January 7 traffic stop, while we’ve seen white officers continue for months, years, their entire lives, after an incident like this.

Even as they are white supremacy’s vessels for racist violence, they become victims of its reach.

There is no complication in this conversation as long as we stay true to the knowledge that policing in this country is a tool of anti-Blackness. Regardless of the race of the cop, they are a part of that system and therefore enacting its goals."

PURSUE POLICE REFORM ON CAPITOL HILL
Even moderate police reform has been stalled in Washington. The Senate failed to act after the House passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which would make it easier to investigate and prosecute criminal cops, limit qualified immunity and ban federal no-knock warrants and chokeholds. The Nichols family’s attorney, Senate Judiciary Committee chair Richard Durbin and the Congressional Black Caucus have all called for a new push on this legislation. Let’s contact our Senators and the White House and add our voices to this demand.

PROTECT MEDICARE AS WE KNOW IT!
This month, the Biden administration is set to implement its version of a Trump-era Medicare program. Known as ACO REACH, the program is aimed at traditional Medicare. It will incentivize private for-profit health care managers to restrict patient care, and automatically enroll patients into ACO REACH without their consent. A group of lawmakers led by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) have complained to the federal agency overseeing the program that a number of companies admitted into ACO REACH have a history of Medicare, Medicaid, and VA fraud. Let’s (1) tell President Biden to issue an executive order to stop Medicare ACO REACH, and (2) tell our Members of Congress to pass legislation ending ACO REACH and protect traditional Medicare from schemes that favor profit maximization over patient care

For this week's JIPA virtual road trip, we will head south to FLORIDA - Primary election August 23

Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, is widely considered to be harboring White House ambitions. But, first, he is seeking re-election in a state that has been shifting away from Democrats. Representative Charlie Crist, a former governor, and Nikki Fried, the state agriculture commissioner, are among those competing for the Democratic nomination. The other big-name Republican on the ballot: Senator Marco Rubio, who won his second term in 2016 after bowing out of the G.O.P. presidential primary. Representative Val Demings is the Democratic favorite to take him on. Our primary objectives in Florida are to flip the governorship and win at least

one competitive U.S. House race in FL-02. FL-02 is rated as R+7. The GOP has a slight advantage here compared to the country as a whole, but this seat is winnable for Democrats.

he Week-July 5-July 10

For this week, our virtual JIPA road trip will return us to one of our critical target states - Arizona. Four years ago, Arizona was represented by two Republican Senators. Today, it is represented by two Democrats. Make no mistake, Arizona is still very much a purple state, but it’s one that seems uniquely suited for the emerging Democratic coalition.

In 2020, the Presidential and Senate elections and both competitive House races were all decided by less than 4.5%. With a Republican Governor and Republican-controlled legislature, voter suppression is very likely on the way, especially targeted at Arizona’s large Latino and Native American populations.

The Arizona Republican Party is one of the most unhinged and extreme in the country, fully bought in to fringe conspiracy theories that brought us the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. It’s dangerous for the country but possibly helpful for our chances as these Republicans alienate educated suburban voters and more conservative Latinos who might otherwise be willing to give Republicans a chance.

ARIZONA PRIMARY ELECTION - August 2, 2022

OUR CANDIDATES

HOLD: Senator Mark Kelly (AZ-D) In 2020, we were proud to be part of the winning coalition that helped former astronaut Mark Kelly ascend to the U.S. Senate. Since it was a special election, he’s back on the ballot in 2022, so we’re back to make sure that this decisive Democratic pickup stays firmly blue.

FLIP: David Schweikert All you need to know about Rep. David Schweikert is he voted to overturn the presidential election AFTER the deadly insurrection on the U.S. Capitol. He betrayed his oath of office and must be removed in 2022.

HOLD: Rep. Tom O’Halleran Rep. Tom O’Halleran came to Washington, DC to get things done. He understands the business of clean energy better than almost anyone and has devoted much of his time in Congress to climate change solutions and protecting public lands and tribal sovereignty.

This month we are going to take a virtual road trip to 5 different states which have elections in the House & Senate, critical elections we can win to help us hold seats we narrowly won and flip seats we narrowly lost.

NEVADA

PRIMARY ELECTION

Early voting May 28-June 10. Election Day, June 14

Nevada is one of the great success stories for Democrats in the 2010s. Six years ago, the state had a Republican governor and Republican-controlled State House and Senate, and one of its two U.S. Senators was a Republican too. Today, they’re all blue.

The Biden-Harris ticket won by a margin of less than 34,000 votes, and both House Democrats faced stiff challenges to retain their seats. Nevada is still a purple state, but it’s also an efficient state to organize in, with half the population represented by Democrats in priority hold House races. Opportunities abound to grow the electorate, but turning out the state’s younger, more transient, and often less politically engaged population will be key to success.

OUR CANDIDATES:

HOLD: Senator Catherine Cortez Masto. In 2016, Catherine Cortez Masto narrowly defeated her Republican opponent by only 27,000 votes, becoming the first Latina in the U.S. Senate. Nevada is a perpetual swing state, and Republicans will invest a lot of money into it. This is a must-defend seat.

HOLD: Rep. Steven Horsford. Rep. Steven Horsford has made job opportunities central to his work. As Nevada’s first Black Senate Majority Leader, Steven Horsford led the charge on an ambitious Clean Energy Jobs Initiative, and prior to that he led the Culinary Training Academy, Nevada’s largest job training program, for more than a decade.

HOLD: Rep. Susie Lee. A Member of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, Rep. Susie Lee comes to Congress with years of experience in our public schools. She knows that a quality education can transform lives for the better, and we need that kind of focus in the House of Representatives.
